The young man's eyes slowly opened to an unfamiliar ceiling. Light danced upon his windows to the world and he annoyingly shut them once more. He attempted to roll over and gain the shade as an ally but something heavy laid upon him. A smile came to his lean face. The man ran his fingers along the pale, naked shoulders that rest against his chest. The young girl he held stirred lightly under the heavy green blanket as he ran his hand along her face. The girl, now slightly alert, began to rub her nose on the man's neck. It was a short journey and in no time the girls lips laid a gentle kiss to her lovers ear.
"Good Morning." The women said hushed, having yet to attune her voice to the waking world. The girl released the tight grip from the man's neck that she had held for the past few hours. She slowly made her way to a sitting position. She raised her hands into the air, obeying her body's call to stretch. The man watched as her lips parted and let out a yawn. Her long, blond hair came to rest just above her shoulders. The man made a leap, Interrupting the stretch, and embraced her.
"Avonelle." The man paused for a moment. "What would I do without you?"
For a moment, the room lay quite. The lone window acted as a door for the light to bother the young lovers. Dust particles danced with one another in free fall. Then, some decided to end their waltz and retreat from the light, escaping sight.
"Well Rowin." Avonelle said, her voice soothing to the man's ears. "You'd be in trouble wouldn't you." The soft voice changed into laughter as the young girl turned, bringing her arms to rest around Rowin's neck. He felt a slight pressure against his chest, and could tell the necklace he had given her laid bare against them. Goosebumps that the young girl failed to notice now rose from Rowin's arm. In this moment, He was the happiest he would ever be.
"Did you dream?"Avonelle said as she placed a pale, warm hand against the man's face. The morning air was crisp, refreshing, and cool to the lover's warm skin. Suddenly, Rowin's vision began to blur. Tears swelled in his eyes as the room began to spin. The speed at which everything was happening was swift. Then it seemed as if time nearly stopped. The spinning room became slow. Something seemed to be pulling at his body. Rowin felt as if he was going to be ripped from the ground and hurled toward the sky. Then, without warning, the room ceased to spin. The man's gaze now met with Avonelle's piercing, light blue, eyes. The young girl made a swift movement, and the accompanying breeze tickled Rowin's skin. In a moment, the young lovers were wrapped in the heavy green blanket under which they slept.
"Dreaming of other girls already!" Avonelle said as she nudged her elbow into Rowin's chest playfully, the necklace she wore lifting slightly. She looked into Rowin's eyes once more. "Then if you could have one dream come true, what would it be?"
Rowin took a moment to mull the question over. To be honest, he believed he was in a dream, with the room threatening to spin at anytime. "I would have never wanted this moment to end." Rowin answered, if this was a dream, then this was the best dream he could ever have.
"Your so..." Avonelle said as she stood on high on her toes, meeting Rowins face.
"...you." The last word escaped from her lips and gave only a slight sound as she kissed the man softly. Rowin felt joy build in his body. It was such a great feeling. The warmth of her lips, the touch of her skin, holding her so close, Rowin welcomed the feelings with the same open arms he now held his lover with. He felt her lips reluctantly leave his as the necklace she wore dragged across his chest.
"Aren't you going to ask me?" Avonelle said as she slipped from under the blanket. The sunlight laid gently on her pale skin as she broke from Rowin's embrace. The little undergarments that she wore clung to her petite frame as if they were nothing at all. Her footsteps were light and graceful as she made her way to a pile of clothes laying on the ground. Halfway to the pile she turned and gave Rowin an annoyed look. He ran his fingers through his short, brown hair and quickly replayed the conversation in his mind.
"If you could have any dream come true, other then me, what would it be?" Rowin smirked as he asked the question. Avonelle had already grabbed her dress, and was in mid-air, throwing herself to her lover. As she landed in Rowin's arms, the white fabric wrapped itself around his head. With his senses dulled, Rowin could hear only Avonelle's child-like laughter. Her laugh had always been young-sounding, even in her seventeenth year. Rowin had just taken his first breathe of fresh air after untangling the dress when he felt pressure against his legs. He sat up and wrapped his arms around Avonelle's stomach, drawing her close as she sat on his lap.
"I want to fly free among the clouds..." Avonelle turned her head and met Rowin's light green eyes.
"I want to watch the sunset, the same as the birds...." She kissed Rowin's forehead lightly, her necklace spun slightly and rested again on her chest.
"I want to be free." She met her lover's eyes once more and smiled. Rowin felt warmth flow through his body as the light from the window grew brighter, causing him to squint his eye.
"I'll make your dream come true." Rowin said as Avonelle moved her head in front of the light's path, allowing her lover to regain his sight. When his eyes re focused, Rowin saw a smile broad on Avonelle's face.
"Promise me." She said as her smile grew.
"I promise." Rowin said with no trace of doubt in his voice. Avonelle threw her arms around his neck and held her head to his heart. Suddenly, Rowins heart began to ache. A pain came to him, flowing from his heart, slowing taking over his body. The muscles in his arms twisted, causing Rowin to yelp in pain. His legs began to twitch, his vision blur. He tried to reach Avonelle, but she did not turn, she began fade from his sight.. The room began to spin so quickly, that every color blurred together. Soon the only colors that remained were black and white. Then, without warning, the canvas of colors painted a new scene.
It seemed like Rowin had just awoken from a very, very, long dream. He felt for a moment as if he was floating, then pain came to him in great force. His arms, his legs, every muscle in his body screamed at him. He felt as a warm liquid flowed over his closed eyes. He tried to bring his hand to his face, to wipe clear his sight, but his arms refused to move.
Rowin didn't remember loosing his hearing, but all at once sound invaded his ears. Something around him was constantly cackling, constantly roaring at him. Then, Rowin regained his sense of temperature. The sweat that ran from every pore in his body seemed to burn his skin in the immense heat that he felt. Once more Rowin tried to bring his arm to wipe his face, but again failed. Then, luck came to the man, his other arm answered the call of its brother and wiped Rowins view clean. At first, he had thought that it was sweat that blocked his vision, but he was wrong. As he examined his hand, it was coated in a dark crimson color. Blood.
Suddenly, the roar of flames and the cackling of burning wood left Rowin. He became deaf. His whole body left the ground, and time made haste around him. He experienced vertigo. For an instant, he felt resistance against his back, then pain shot through his body. The instant was gone, and Rowin's lungs breathed semi-fresh air for the first time again. The feeling in his stomach still attacked him, and from the running view he saw, he was approaching something quickly. Before he could brace himself, he crashed into something solid. The last thing Rowin felt was the cracking of several of his ribs accompanied with the horrible sound of breaking bones.
The first raindrops began to fall, greeting Rowin's arm, finding a new home. His dry skin absorbed the drop, and for a moment, relieved it's thirst. Then, where the drop had fallen, turned a dark red color. The skin that had happily welcomed the moisture, now thrashed in discontent. Rowin bit his lip to hold from crying out in pain. He glanced to the sky, trying to unfocus on his arm. Horror filled his face as a million tiny, black dots were fast approaching from the sky.
Rowin tried to run, but his legs refused to obey. He began to feel all hope leave him. He wanted to scream, he wanted to yell, but he was unable to find his voice. Once more the man looked to the sky. The rain was only moments away from striking him down. The man fell to his knees and let his head hang low. This was the end for him.
"What are you doing silly." The voice of an angel came to Rowin. He lifted his heavy head to meet the piercing blue gaze of his lover's eye's. Avonelle's smile warmed his heart. Her eyes looked at him, they were full of love. The sound of a million raindrops hitting something caused Rowin to again look to the sky. A white fabric held watermarks about it. He traced the source of his protection to the hands of his lover. Her cheekbones showed themselves slightly as she continued to smile, holding an umbrella. Rowin returned her smile, as happy to see her as every other time he laid his eyes on her.
Rowin couldn't recall how they began to walk, but he found himself keeping stride with his lover. She had refused to let him hold the umbrella, saying that it was cuter when she did. The man tried to focus on his surroundings, but a dense fog covered them, like a dream. The sound of the rain still slamming into the umbrella carried through both lover's ears. Rowin felt as Avonelle snuck her free hand into his, and he felt peace warming his body. They talked about their life together, there plans for the future, what made them happy. The walk continued for eternity, yet it felt so short.
"What would I do without you?" As the words left Rowin's mouth, a raindrop splashed on his hand, then another, and another. Avonelle didn't seem to notice as he pulled his hand from hers. The pain returned to him. Through the shock of a burning sensation, Rowin looked to the umbrella's top. The rain had not burned a hole through, the absent wind had not blown it apart, a piece of the umbrella simply was not there.
"Well Rowin..." Her voice seemed to sooth the pain from his skin. "you'd be in trouble wouldn't you?"
As the words left Avonelle's mouth, another part of the umbrella disappeared. Her clothing, which Rowin had just noticed, was on the receiving end of the rains assault. Slowly, the fabric began to melt away. Rowin stopped his lover from walking and jumped in front of her. Avonelle looked up into his worry-filled eyes. Hers were as calm and blue as the ocean after the high-tide. As his calves began to burn, unnaturally, he wrapped his arms around her. Once again their eyes met, and slowly closed as they both brought their lips together for a kiss.
Rowin didn't remember the kiss ending, but the next thing he knew, he was standing on a familiar dock. The cerulean sky, cloudless and free, was a welcome sight to the man. His legs no longer burned, his hand no longer screamed, but his heart hit heavy against his ribs. Rowin heard something faint, but the mighty roar of the ocean drowned any possibility of him identifying the words. Still he looked around, and found his lover next to him. Avonelle was never very good at hiding her emotions, and this time was no different. Tears had come to her since the kiss, and they made their comfortable home in her eyes. She threw herself into Rowins arms. Their final embrace was short lived, and Rowin wished he could remember more about it. He should have taken every aspect of that moment into his mind when it happened, but he had not. Avonelle now stood in a small, wooden, one-person boat. Rowin stood on the dock, confused and scared.
"What am I going to do without you?" Rowin said as he looked down at his lover with sadness. Without a word Avonelle untied the boat, and pushed herself from the dock, her tears still persistent. Avonelle silently wished she could be in her lovers arms once more, but that time was not now as the sound of many feet running down the dock came to her.
"I'll find you, i promise." Rowin never made a promise he couldn't keep, and relief flushed over Avonelle, she knew he would find her.
"Good~bye Avonelle." Rowin said through sobs. What happened next shocked Rowin. With a great leap Avonelle jumped from the boat, back onto the dock. There was passion as the tears in her light blue eyes continued to fall. She ran into Rowin with great speed and began to sob into his chest. Rowin wrapped his hands around her as he felt moisture break through his clothing where his lovers eyes were positioned. She took her hand and beat it three times against his chest.
"Never.." She could barely get her words out, the sobs were so great. "..never say good~bye to me Rowin." Avonelle looked up to Rowins eyes and gave him a fake smile. Her face was wet with tears everywhere. Rowin closed his eyes. He wanted to go with her, he never wanted to be away from her, but when again his eyes opened, she was only a spec on the horizon. The sound of feet grew closer and Rowin's world began to spin. The sky and ocean became one, the sun and the moon melted together, and again Rowin opened his eyes.
Never before had Rowin felt this much physical pain. The scene that greeted him when he opened his eyes seemed to taunt him. The golden red sky looked beautiful. An army of puffy purple clouds declared war on the fading sky from the corner of his vision. The taunting ended as Rowin somehow managed to roll onto his side. His lower chest exploded in pain and he remembered the terrible sound of his bones breaking. Rowin watched as half of the tan, clay building in front of him collapsed to the ground. He could see the structure crash to the dirt road in flames, yet no sound came to his ears. Yet something called out to him. He heard his name spoken ever so slightly. He heard the voice of his lover. He turned to source of the sound and with all his strength, threw his arm in front of him.
Rowin dug his fingertips in the dirt road, and in response more pain came to him. His body had enough, and was collapsing around him. No longer could he feel his legs, and his fingertips were wearing down quickly. Still, he fought. He pulled himself along the dirt with his good hand, which caused his ribs to ignite with pain even more. With the next pull of his body, he slammed his head to the ground. Some of the dry dirt enetered his mouth, joining with the blood that had made its way down his face. The salty, dry taste was not pleasent. He rested his head to his side, fighting against unconscious. Slowly, he closed his eyes.
Rowin traveled through a hundred dreams, a hundred nightmares, he was now in the captivity of his thoughts. Nervousness came over him several times, making him anxious. Peace also came to him, he felt intune with nature. All of a sudden, he felt as if his body was hurled back to reality, and words he had not chosen to speak came from his mouth.
"Keep your eyes closed." Rowin said aloud. He felt something heavy on his back. There were legs interlocked with his arms, his neck was held firm with forearms. Rowin knew it was his lover, even with his eyes still closed. He gently placed Avonelle on the ground. He made his way, by feel, to her back and wrapped his arms around her. Interlocking his hands on her stomach. He knew, that Avonelles imagination had taken flight. He wanted to keep his eyes closed, but this was just a memory, so he had to obey his next words.
"Alright, open." Rowins voice whispered in Avonelle's ear. Both Rowin and Avonelle then opened their eyes. For Avonelle, her imagination had landed, and reverted back to reality. A warm green light filled her vision and she was in awe. Thousands of green fireflies flew around the destined lovers, their light seemed to shine brightest around the couple. This was the first time Rowin had seen Avonelle in this memory. She was beautiful, her white dress fit her slender body snugly. Even in the green light, Rowin could still see his lovers pale skin.
The night sky seemed perfect, the stars were bright and unhidden by any clouds. Rowin felt complete, his naked feet feeling the moisture of the grass below. The fireflies flew in every direction, leaving trails of green behind them. Rowin brought his chin to rest on the top of Avonelle's head. Then, he was torn from the memory.
"One...one pull after another." Rowin said aloud to himself, the words encouraging him to keep going. No endorphins had kicked in to the numb the pain of his ribs, and Rowin was afraid to look at his good hand, fearing all that might remain could be bone. Still, he pushed forward. Some invisible force drove him. The man was now to the point where he wasn't even looking where he was dragging himself to. This force was pushing him in the right direction, he knew it. Suddenly he felt his hand grasp something warm. In addition to the source of heat Rowin now held in his hand, a warm, wet feeling came to his face and arm.
"Rowin" There was a long pause after he heard his name spoken. "Is that you my darling?"
Rowin now knew the force that had pushed him this far, it was the same thing that pushed him these past three years. It kept him warm when he was cold. It was his light, when the night was harsh. It was now calling to him, calling his name. The force-was love.
"I'm right here Avonelle." Rowin called to the voice as he pushed his head up from the dirt, opening his eyes. His eyes widened as many undesirable emotions came to him. The wet feeling he had from before was a result of coming into a puddle. The emotion of horror had its chance now, and showed Rowin that the puddle, was blood. He traced the life-fluid back to its source, it was Avonelle. For a moment Rowin became a worm, digging deep inside himself to find strength. He reaped his reward as his bones and muscles-broken and strained- worked together to bring him to his knees. There he saw her, his love, leaving the world in front of him. The only part of her body that wasn't broken or beaten, was the side of her face that now lay on one side. Pale and perfect, her peaceful gaze looking to the horizen of mixed orange and purple.
"No....no...no,no." Rowin was frantic, the tears were already curving around his lips. She didn't move her head, but blue gave birth to blue and a tear came from the eye Rowin could see. She did not respond. Rowin slowly put his hand behind her head. Gently, the wrecked lover brought her upper body to rest on his lap. She had been cut slightly above her head. It was a dirty, unorthodox, cut from shrapenal. Her pale skin was stained red.
"I love you." she said as soft as a whisper. Rowin held his lover close. "It's so sad." she continued. Rowin would not interrupt her, she was using the last of her life. "It's so lonely. It's letting go of something forever." Rowin began to sob.
"That's why i never want you to say it." Avonelles final words came to Rowin, and his sobbing became uncontrollable. He watched as his lovers eyes glazed over. Rowin had lived for twenty years, yet the reason he lived that long had passed in only a moment.
The man swore he felt someone embrace him. He felt warm arms wrap around his neck from behind. Light green filled his vision, the same as three years ago. He felt pressure against his back. He swore he heard a voice call to him.
"You'll never be without me."
